Buying recordings these days has reverted for the most part it seems to “pre-late sixties”. Up until Revolver by The Beatles, albums consisted of collections of an artist’s singles that had been recently released. “A” and “B” sides and on occasion an unreleased song. Albums of related songs that came to be called “concept” albums started about the time of Revolver if not with Revolver.

I still buy the occasional CD but remarkably, to me, only a couple a year. Over 90% of what I buy now are single songs, with the occasional “buy album” at the iTunes store if I really like an artist or if I’m replacing an old vinyl recording or a CD. What really surprised me is how many “old albums” I’ve only chosen a few songs from…. heresy I say!

I’ve never been a real audiophile so the digital versions work perfectly well for me. With my 3rd Gen iPod I can drive coast to coast never hearing the same song twice. Now THAT was a pipe dream 20 years ago.
